Indiana Speaker of the House Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, spoke to Dearborn County Commissioners. Indiana ranks, per capita, 50th in the country in managerial or professional employment, “49th or 50th” in the creation of new jobs, and ranks fifth in the country in bankruptcy declarations. Indiana also loses about 96,000 college graduates each year, said Bosma.

He emphasized the state needs to find ways to retain and attract young adults.

The other top priority this year, according to Bosma, in the state will be property taxes. Bosma said it was his prediction that because of the state of the budget, property taxes will rise this year about 8 percent, although he did not want to see that happen. Other sources of revenue need to be investigated, said Bosma.

State Rep. Bob Bischoff, D-Greendale said later the rise is likely to occur because of shifting costs from state to local governments. Bischoff also was not pleased about the possible hike in property tax rates. For complete actilce Indiana Property Taxes

Priests decry Lake property taxes Lawmakers urged to rectify injustice done to poor BY BILL DOLAN

The Gary Diocese's priests are denouncing the recent property tax reassessment as unfair to Lake County's poorest.

The Priests Council and Heartland Center issued a statement Thursday that the new property-tax structure unjustly burdens Gary, East Chicago, Hammond and Whiting residents.

ANDERSON, Ind. (NLI) - Madison County is approving a residential property tax cut that could save some homeowners up to $200.

House OKs 7 percent cut in property taxes for '06 Repeal of tax isn't likely to be law

"Replacing the $5.5 billion generated by the property tax would take a 7-percentage-point increase in the state sales tax (to a total of 13 percent) or a 5-percentage-point increase in the state's income tax (to more than 8 percent), Espich said. Or lawmakers could approve some combination of both.

Rep. Billy Bright, R-North Vernon, has signed a no-tax pledge. But he said yesterday that he would be willing to consider "replacement" taxes, as long as the property tax was going away.
